Inspired by the rich tradition of architecture in the Pacific Northwest and the incredible landscape of the region, Matthew Roman founded Roman Design LLC in 2006. Dedicated to creating beautiful, functional, and enduring human environments, the firm offers single family residential design services rooted in classical principles and regional precedents. Whether for a new house or an addition to a historic home, thoughtful design begins with a thorough understanding of place. Attention to century-old building traditions and modern craft make each project a lasting statement about what is truly sustainable. With over 21 years of experience in residential design Matthew’s work continues to add quality and depth to the region’s architectural heritage.

Matthew Roman holds a Bachler of Architecture degree from the University of Notre Dame where he was afforded the opportunity to live and study in Rome, Italy for one year. He moved to Portland, Oregon in 1994 with his wife and son to pursue a career in architecture and urban design. He has been working ever since to preserve Portland’s architectural heritage both through his architectural design and support of not-for-profit organizations.  He has served on the Board of Directors for the Pittock Mansion Society and Restore Oregon, elected Board Chair of both organizations. He is also a founding board member of the Preservation Artisans Guild.  He was appointed to the Portland Historic Landmarks Commission in 2016. Matthew’s work includes numerous renovations and restorations of historic structures throughout the Portland/Vancouver area.
